Heather Skeens

Dr. Heather M. Skeens, MD, CFMP

Dr. Heather Skeens is a Fellowship-trained, Board-certified Ophthalmologist (eye surgeon), and Certified Functional Medicine Practitioner. She is the Founder of the West Virginia Cornea and Cataract Center of Excellence in Charleston, West Virginia, as well as Almost Heaven Yoga and Sauna Services, based in Summersville, WV.

Dr. Skeens specializes in state of the art cataract surgery and cornea transplants. She discovered functional medicine through her personal struggles with autoimmune disease, as well as while providing end-of-life care for a family member with a rare form of cancer known as sarcoma.

As she was provided with only traditional allopathic medical options for her health, as well as for the care of her family member, she was increasingly dissatisfied with the lack of exploration into why a sickness develops in the first place. It was through these struggles and frustrations that she learned of functional medicine. Her studies in this most scientific based area of medicine, allowed her the knowledge to seek out the treatment of root illness cause, and reverse her own multitude of daily signs and symptoms. Dr. Skeens is a daily practitioner of yoga for eight years. She has taken yoga classes at some of the most prestigious yoga centers throughout the United States, which include Vinyasa, Ashtanga, and Bikram style yoga, among others. She has studied meditation with one of the world’s foremost experts in the discipline. She is a second-degree black belt of the Korean Taekwondo Association, and studies under the direction of Grandmaster Sok Ho Kang of South Charleston, WV. Dr. Skeens is Board eligible for the Diplomate exam in Clinical Nutrition.

Dr. Skeens is proud to bring to others the treatments that she has used to reverse her autoimmune disease. The use of an infrared sauna, yoga, meditation, diet and nutrition, along with mineral and vitamin supplementation. She, along with sister, Kellie Blake, of Nutrisense Nutrition Consulting, operate a functional medicine based practice in South Charleston, WV.
